US failing to control hospital infections as non-payment rules loom

Attempts by US government organisations and private bodies to control hospital acquired infections (HAIs) are proving ineffective, the Government Accountability Office has said.

Medtronic’s Talent abdominal stent reaches 20% more patients in the US

Talent, the abdominal stent graft developed by Medtronic for the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) has been approved by the US FDA. The premarket approval (PMA) granted by the agency means that the device is now available to around 6,000 US patients previously considered unsuitable candidates for the procedure.

UK industry challenges generalisations of studies slamming glycaemia monitoring

Researchers questioning the clinical value and costeffectiveness of blood glucose self-monitoring in type 2 (noninsulin-dependent diabetes have rekindled a decade-long debate on the issue. The main findings of two studies published last week by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) are that routine testing may be “wasting” around £100m ($198m) a year, with little glycaemic control benefit and, reputedly, worse quality of life.

Synergetics sets lawyers on Alcon for bully-boy, anti-competitive antics

Synergetics USA has filed a civil antitrust lawsuit against ophthalmic powerhouse Alcon, accusing the latter of using underhand tactics to stave off competition. O’Fallon, Missouri-based Synergetics claims it has suffered “losses in the tens of millions of dollars” as a result of Alcon’s “unfair practices”.
