Westover leads Biophysical's blood test charge in the UK

Biophysical, a US developer of biomarker-based technologies, is set to make its much-publicised Biophysical250 test available in the UK through an exclusive licensing deal with Westover Medical. The deal, of which financial terms were not disclosed, will see UK-based private healthcare provider Westover offer the test in its two existing clinics in London and in a third to be opened in the capital later this year.

  • 2007 shows "good start" to Axis-Shield's new commercialisation phase

    Anglo-Nordic IVD developer Axis-Shield said it succeeded in achieving "strong underlying growth" for 2007 in the face of a weak dollar and the continued decline in homocysteine revenues. The company posted revenues of £66.7m ($134m), up 10% from the previous year, while operating profit climbed 31% to £7.1m. Pre-tax profit was £2m.

  • UK team create "most sensitive TB test ever developed"

    A new blood test developed by UK-based researchers could rule out tuberculosis (TB) infection within 48 hours, a study has shown. The study shows that use of the new test, called ELISpot-Plus, in conjunction with tuberculin skin test (the current standard), can prove that a patient does not have TB with 99% accuracy. The trial, results of which were published in the March 4 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine, was conducted by a team from Imperial College, London and the University of Oxford.

  • Spain misses chance to take EU lead on rare diseases screening

    The Spanish government has sought to reaffirm its commitment to rare diseases, but has fallen short of taking an EU lead on the issue with a much-called-for screening strategy. The national rare diseases federation (FEDER) renewed calls for the launch of services to improve early diagnosis (including neonatal screening) and prevention, during a conference to mark the first European Rare Diseases Day, on February 29, but the government did not oblige.
