What is RSS? RSS stands for 'Really Simple Syndication' or 'Rich Site Summary'. It is a way to send information over the Internet using eXtensible Markup Language (XML). RSS enables websites that carry frequently updated information to generate a 'feed' – usually of headlines or important stories – that can be received by anyone who has an RSS News Reader. All websites using RSS work to a set of shared standards which means that you can receive information from a range of different providers in one place. RSS is growing rapidly in popularity. Many sites, like BBC.co.uk and CNN.com already provide their news headlines in this format. How do I get RSS? Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera and Safari, have RSS facilities built in. Alternatively you’ll need to download a piece of free software called a 'News Reader', 'Client' or 'Aggregator'. The software monitors your chosen websites and alerts you when there is new content from these sources to be viewed. How do I get a News Reader? There are a range of different News Readers available and new versions are appearing all the time. Different News Readers work on different operating systems so you will need to take this into account when you make your choice. All are easy to download and to use. Google provides a list of downloadable News Readers here. Some other options are: Windows: www.newzcrawler.com www.feeddemon.com/feeddemon/index.asp www.awasu.com Mac OS X: www.newsfirerss.com http://ranchero.com/netnewswire/ Web-based readers: www.bloglines.com How do I add Scrip to my RSS sources? You will see that a small orange button has appeared on the Scrip homepage (and is also above). Once you have set up a News Reader you can click on this, or any RSS button, and subscribe, free of charge, to the feed. The various different ways of adding an RSS feed to your News Reader should be made clear in the News Reader interface. You may need to drag the URL from the RSS feed to your News Reader. You may need to cut and paste the URL into a new feed in your News Reader. Either way, it’s very straightforward!
